CASE STUDY: Concerts Photography
is one of the most challenging fields in photography. The reality is a photographer cannot direct the artist, has no control over the lighting which is constantly changing, and cannot access any angle since photography is heavily restricted usually to the first 3x songs only and location of shoot is either Pit or in front of House which is set by artist management. If the stage is high built being positioned at Pit is a tough call because we will never capture the lead artist with the band only steep angles and with a bit of luck there is great stage lighting behind the performers. Front of House is commonly the best angle to capture the stage with crowd or lead singer with band in background however FOH is quite far, ca. 30-50m and this position requires super expensive Professional Tele Lenses get good shots out of couple minutes performance. In case of a Lighting Setup which includes the use of large scale LED mesh screens as well lots of strobes or the spot on the lead artist is way to bright compared to the rest of the stage = this when improvisation and experience skills kick into an autopilot mode constantly adjusting, reviewing, shooting scenario as the camera’s automations are almost completely useless, therefore. For larger concerts it is crucial to have a 2nd shooter onsite who can capture all checklist items and focuses on complimentary angles whereas the Lead Photographer identifies all the hero shots, finds out about Special FX and scouts the full venue for best crowd shots. If the Arena is completely packed there is no way to walk against the crowd and this where experienced photographers are just warming up and go out there and capture insane moments of the night.
