The Department of Culture and Tourism conserves and promotes the heritage and culture of Abu Dhabi emirate and leverages them in the development of a world-class, sustainable destination of distinction that enriches the lives of visitors and residents alike. 

Its policies, plans and programs relate to the preservation of heritage and culture, including protecting archaeological and historical sites and to developing museums, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. 

Manarat Al Saadiyat, meaning ‘place of enlightenment’, contributes to the art scene in Abu Dhabi through exhibitions, workshops, performances and drop-in art studio spaces. The site for the annual Abu Dhabi Art show, Manarat Al Saadiyat includes an outdoor events terrace, a café and brasserie, three galleries for temporary exhibits, a photography studio, an art studio and a 250-seat auditorium.

Abu Dhabi Art expands beyond the notion of a traditional art fair, in placing strong emphasis on a diverse public engagement program, including art installations and exhibitions, talks and events that take place in different locations throughout the year.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

I had the honor to document the early years of Abu Dhabi Art and various other cultural ambitions during its peak momentum, a time when Louvre Abu Dhabi was still on the drawing board, a time when Saddiyat Island could only be accessed by boat.

Prior to Abu Dhabi Art moved into its new purpose built home Manarat Al Saadiyat it was held for several years at Emirates Palace which was an awesome venue with huge opportunity for diversified setups, plenty space and beach access to create an outstanding event concept.

However, every year the buildup was a challenging undertaking as well everything had to be purpose built and dismantled after the event concluded. Meeting some of the finest architects and renowned international & regional artists and seeing their work will remain in great memories filled with delight.
